The success of IVF can vary from person to person and case to case. A doctor must ensure that couples banking on it also understand its limitations.

It isn’t that IVF will 100 per cent help bring a child into the world. Couples, before they put their hope in it, must be aware that failure rates too are high, says Dr. Mangala Devi, the chief gynaecologist at Smile Baby IVF in Bengaluru.

“As technologies, IVF or other assisted reproductive therapies are pretty sound these days. The doctors, too, are adept at using them.  However, much depends on how the couples themselves respond to the treatment,” says Dr. Mangala.

Today, it is possible during IVF treatment to identify and segregate the healthy sperms and eggs from those that are deficient. It is also possible to induce the best of them to fuse inside the woman when she is at her most fertile. And if, for some reason, it can’t happen, the sperms and eggs can be engaged outside the body, in a lab, before being put back  inside her in the form of a viable embryo.

However, there is nothing in IVF or in any other assisted technology yet, that can ensure the embryo will also attach itself to her womb, a condition necessary for pregnancy to be achieved.

“That is where many of the failures happen,” says Dr. Mangala. “Of course, there are other reasons too.”

Worldwide, IVF has a success rate of 40 per cent or less. Of course, the figure may differ from centre to centre and clinic to clinic, depending on the experience of the doctor and the team assisting her.

It may also depend on the couples who come in for the treatment. If the couples have issues that the doctor can override, the success count would be high. Otherwise, it would be dismal.

Undergoing IVF is a costly affair. Even at a fair-cost hospital such as the one Dr Mangala runs, the price of IVF can go over Rs 1 lakh, that too, for the standard-line procedure. If, on the other hand, she has to recommend a step-up procedure, the cost can go well-beyond Rs 2 lakh.



Some of the second-line tests and procedures that give the doctor a better handle on the situation, can be expensive. But it is not to say, they come with any guarantee.

Therefore, ‘it should be every doctor’s case to keep the couple duly informed on the up and down sides of procedure,’ she says.
